A Pioneer Missionary
One of the first companions of St. Ignatius of Loyola and a founding spirit of the Society of Jesus.

St. Francis Xavier (1506–1552), the heavenly Patron of St Xavier's College, Thumba, was one of the greatest missionaries and educators of the sixteenth century. His life of faith, learning and selfless service continues to inspire generations in the pursuit of knowledge, compassion and excellence.
Born in the Kingdom of Navarre (present-day Spain), Francis Xavier studied at the University of Paris, where he became one of the first companions of St Ignatius of Loyola and a co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). In 1542, he arrived in India with an extraordinary missionary vision, dedicating himself to the service of the poor and the marginalised, especially the fishing communities along the western and southern coasts.
His missionary journeys brought him to Goa, Tamil Nadu, and the coastal villages of Kerala, including the region around present-day Thumba. Through his humility, pastoral care, and unwavering commitment to human dignity, he became a source of hope and spiritual renewal for countless people.
St Francis Xavier also recognised the transformative power of education. His support for the development of St Paul's College, Goa, one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in Asia, helped lay the foundations of Jesuit education in India, combining intellectual excellence with moral and spiritual formation. This enduring vision continues to inspire Jesuit educational institutions across the world.
At St Xavier's College, Thumba, we proudly uphold his legacy by striving to form men and women of competence, conscience, compassion, and commitment, dedicated to the service of society and the pursuit of truth.
Mission Along the Kerala Coast
With unshakable missionary zeal, St. Francis Xavier journeyed to India in 1542, bringing the message of Christ's love to the shores of Goa, Tamil Nadu, and the southern coasts of Kerala. His devoted service along the coastal belt of Thiruvananthapuram, reaching up to Thumba, left a lasting spiritual legacy among the fishing communities.
He became a beacon of hope, faith, and learning for the people of this region, guiding them through his compassion and deep spiritual insight.
