We live in an era driven by data, algorithms, and quantitative reasoning. Artificial intelligence, financial modelling, climate prediction, and public health analytics all rest on mathematical foundations. The Department of Mathematics at St. Xavier’s College, which attained independent status in 2005 with the launch of B.Sc. Mathematics, has built its teaching around this reality; equipping students not merely to understand mathematical structures, but to apply them confidently in a world that increasingly demands it.
The department offers the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme of the University of Kerala, with three-year Honours / four-year Honours with Research pathways. The curriculum places pure mathematics and statistics side by side, so that students build logical rigour and applied analytical skill together. Classroom teaching is paired with laboratory work in statistical software, algorithmic thinking and data modelling, while capstone projects introduce students to independent enquiry. Peer learning groups and structured remedial coaching support those who need additional grounding; a mentor-mentee framework tracks individual progress. Expert lectures, industrial visits, and alumni career sessions extend learning beyond the campus.

To grow into a wider centre for quantitative learning in the region, extending the department’s work into postgraduate study in mathematics and data analytics.
The department teaches mathematics as a precise language for understanding and solving real problems, developing logical clarity, computational skill, and ethical judgement in every student.

Mathematics rewards patience. A proof that seems impenetrable on Monday often becomes obvious by Friday, and part of our work is to stay with students through that week. Under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme we teach mathematics and statistics together, because the analytical mind that a proof develops is the same one that reads data honestly.
Those who need more time are given it through peer learning groups and remedial coaching; those ready to move faster are encouraged into research. Every student has a faculty mentor who follows their progress and plans beyond graduation. Whether you are headed for data science, actuarial work, teaching, or research, the reasoning you build here will serve you well.
An NEP-aligned undergraduate programme that builds conceptual confidence in pure and applied mathematics, developing logical reasoning, statistical literacy, and computational skill. Students may exit with a three-year Honours degree or continue into the four-year Honours with Research track.
A curriculum that brings abstract mathematics and applied statistics together, giving students the logical foundation and data-handling tools needed for today’s analytical careers.
Students work directly with statistical software, write algorithms, and build data models.
Each student is assigned a faculty mentor who provides personalised academic guidance and career support from admission through graduation.
Industrial visits, expert lectures, and alumni career sessions connect classroom learning to professional practice and show students where mathematical training can lead.

Modern multimedia teaching aids support the visualisation of spatial geometry, calculus, and data patterns.

Students have access to digital computing resources for statistical software, algorithmic work, and data modelling.
Semester-wise syllabi and course structure documents for the undergraduate Mathematics programme and complementary Statistics papers.
