The Department of Physical Education began at Sreekariyam in June 1964 and moved with the college to Thumba in September 1965. Under Prof. C. S. Joseph, its founding Head from 1965 to 1997, and later under Mr. Jose Kokad, Lt. Dr. George Thomas and Mr. Harrison J., it built the infrastructure and competitive record that earned St. Xavier’s its long-standing reputation as the “Sports College of Kerala”.
The campus houses the St. Xavier’s and KCA Cricket Stadium, maintained in collaboration with the Kerala Cricket Association, a standard football field, an indoor badminton court, courts for basketball, handball and volleyball, and a 200-metre track. Alongside coaching in twelve sports, the department teaches the FYUGP value-added course Exercise and Diet in Weight Management, open to third-semester students of every discipline. Its teams compete at university, state and national level, with recent honours including two All Kerala intercollegiate football titles and a Kerala University boxing gold.

To uphold St. Xavier’s position as a premier sporting institution in Kerala, while fostering physical literacy and lifelong wellness among every student on campus.
The Department of Physical Education fosters health, resilience, and sportsmanship by combining competitive training with accessible instruction in exercise science, nutrition, and personal wellness—guided by the Jesuit understanding that mind and body are formed together.
Six decades of competitive achievement have long given the college its standing as the “Sports College of Kerala”.
The KCA Cricket Stadium, football field, indoor badminton court, outdoor court complex and 200-metre track support daily training and intercollegiate hosting.
Structured training is offered in football, cricket, athletics, basketball, volleyball, handball, kabaddi, cycling, boxing, wushu, badminton and taekwondo.
Exercise and Diet in Weight Management (UK3VACPES202) teaches exercise science and nutrition to third-semester FYUGP students across disciplines.
The MoU with KCA maintains a professional turf stadium on campus and brings regional cricket events to the college.

Sport at St. Xavier’s carries a long and distinguished legacy. Since 1964, the department has fielded teams at university, state, and national levels of competition, earning the title “Sports College of Kerala” on the very grounds visible from our classrooms. Our cricket stadium, maintained in collaboration with the Kerala Cricket Association, together with the football field, indoor badminton court, and athletic track, remains in daily use.
The department’s scope, however, extends beyond athletics. Through the value-added course Exercise and Diet in Weight Management, students from every discipline learn how the body responds to training and nutrition, equipping them with habits that endure well beyond their college years. Whether one arrives to compete at the highest level or simply to build strength and wellbeing, every student is coached, mentored, and given serious attention here. We warmly invite students to make full use of our facilities and grounds.
Offered in Semester III of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, this course provides foundational knowledge in exercise science, nutrition, and lifestyle practices for effective weight management and the prevention of lifestyle-related conditions. It is open to third-semester students of every discipline.
