Attendance & Marks
Academic Discipline & Examination Eligibility
St. Xavier's College, Thumba, maintains strict regulations regarding student attendance to ensure academic discipline and eligibility for university examinations.
Eligibility
Students must maintain at least 75% attendance across all courses in a semester to be eligible to register for the End-Semester Examinations.
Female students are granted a slightly lower minimum requirement of 73% attendance.
Habitual neglect of class work is considered a sufficient reason for serious disciplinary action.
Tracking
Attendance is recorded online or offline for each course separately.
The attendance percentage is calculated by dividing the total hours a student is present by the total class hours conducted for that specific course, then multiplying by 100.
Attendance is taken within strict time windows. Latecomers arriving after these windows will not be marked present for that hour.
If a teacher is absent or attending a staff meeting, attendance for that hour is not taken or granted.
Exemptions
On valid grounds, the university may grant a "condonation" (exemption) for a shortage of attendance up to 10 days in a semester. This is allowable only twice during the entire degree programme.
Students participating in approved university activities or meetings are counted as present upon producing valid certificates, subject to the same 10-day maximum per semester.
Participation in such events (inside or outside the college) requires prior permission from the Class Teacher and approval from the Principal via the relevant committee. Certificates for these activities must be submitted within the same week or by the first class day of the following week.
For camps longer than eight days, (e.g., NSS/NCC camps), students are marked 'D' (On Duty) provided they obtained prior permission through the proper channels and submit an attendance certificate afterward.
Students who are present for internal examinations are automatically granted attendance for that respective course on that day.
Campus Rules
Students are not permitted to go outside the college during class hours without special permission from the Principal or Head of Department.
When not in class, students are expected to spend their time in the Library or Reading Room.
The college urges parents to ensure their wards attend classes regularly and punctually. Details regarding attendance are included in progress reports distributed during Class PTA meetings.
Under the academic regulations, every student is required to spend at least three hours per week in the library, and this attendance is also tracked separately.
