Chemistry sits at the heart of the modern world’s most consequential challenges — climate change, food safety, environmental pollution, pharmaceutical development, and the transition to clean energy all depend on chemical knowledge and innovation. The Department of Chemistry at St. Xavier's College, established as an independent department in 1977, has long recognised this applied dimension: its 1988 UGC-sponsored vocational programme in Industrial Chemistry was an early signal of the practical, outward-looking orientation that continues to define its teaching today.
The department now offers NEP-aligned three-year / four-year Honours degrees / four-year Honours with Research track, with 32 sanctioned seats. Environmental Chemistry runs as a core concern through the curriculum, from green laboratory practice to coastal water quality monitoring in collaboration with Blue Green Coastal Resources and the National Centre for Earth Science Studies. Modern analytical instrumentation, an industry MoU with Travancore Titanium Products Ltd., and a doctorate-qualified faculty active in peer-reviewed research ensure that students engage with chemistry as it is actually practised. More than half of each graduating batch proceeds directly to postgraduate study.

To grow into a recognised centre for chemical research and postgraduate study, applying the principles of green chemistry to the industrial and coastal environmental challenges of the region.
The department combines rigorous instruction in the chemical sciences with disciplined laboratory practice and environmental responsibility, forming graduates who work with scientific integrity and place their expertise at the service of the wider community.

An MoU with Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. and modern analytical instrumentation connect classroom learning to chemistry as it is practised.
Permanent faculty hold doctorates and remain active in peer-reviewed research, mentoring students by name through a structured mentor–mentee system.

Chemistry is learned by doing it carefully. A titration repeated until the endpoint is unmistakable, a spectrum read with attention, a spill managed correctly; these habits matter as much as the theory behind them, and they are what we teach in our up to date laboratory. Our curriculum carries a clear environmental orientation: students study green chemical practice, assess pollution in soil, water, and air, and take part in coastal sampling work with our research partners, while our industrial MoU shows them chemistry at working scale. Every permanent member of this department holds a doctorate and remains active in research, and each student has a mentor who knows their progress by name. More than half of our graduates move directly into postgraduate study. Come with curiosity and the discipline to work steadily, and this department will take you a long way.
A comprehensive undergraduate programme providing strong foundational and advanced knowledge across physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry, with an emphasis on laboratory skills, environmental awareness, and scientific inquiry.
A practical certification course covering hazardous material handling, chemical spill response, personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols, and regulatory safety compliance.
Coursework in Environmental Chemistry, green chemical practices, and coastal ecosystem monitoring gives the degree a clear sustainability orientation relevant to today’s world.
Active MoUs with Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. and BlueGreen Coastal Resources provide industrial training, site visits, and joint coastal field studies.
A structured mentor-mentee system offering individualised academic counselling and career guidance from the first year through graduation.
Students secure positions in both public and private sector organisations, with recent campus placements at Guide House, Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram (2025).
