Established in 1981 with the Bachelor of Commerce programme, the Department of Commerce has shaped commercial education at St. Xavier's College for more than four decades. It introduced the Pre-Degree Fourth Group in 1985 to widen regional access and attained postgraduate status in 2013 with the M.Com in Finance. The department now admits 60 students to B.Com and 20 to M.Com, both with a finance specialisation.
A Memorandum of Understanding with the International Skill Development Corporation allows students to pursue CMA-US and ACCA certifications alongside the degree. Teaching is supported by smart classrooms, a departmental library of over a thousand titles, daily business periodicals and virtual trading laboratories. The Book Bank Scheme, remedial coaching and peer-assisted learning ensure that support reaches every student. Recent batches have produced University of Kerala rank holders, UGC-NET qualifiers and placements with SBI, IBM, Infosys, KSFE and Muthoot Fincorp.
Over the years, the department has earned a reputation for excellence through the dedicated efforts of its highly qualified faculty members, with Prof. V. Dasan as its first faculty member, followed by Dr. K J Joy, Prof. Tom Joseph, Prof. Augustine Joseph, Prof. Thampi Y., Dr. Zajo Joseph, Dr. Justus J. and Dr. Anitta Mary Ruben.

To be a leading regional centre for commerce and finance education, where excellence, integrity and social commitment advance together.
Guided by the Jesuit tradition of academic rigour and social responsibility, the department develops analytically capable and ethically grounded professionals through career-aligned instruction, applied research and sustained community engagement.
The ISDC partnership allows students to earn internationally recognised CMA-US and ACCA credentials while completing their degree.

A student-led body runs a year-round calendar of academic forums, the Experiential Marketing Fest and civic literacy drives such as the PAN for All campaign.

For more than forty years this department has prepared students for the world of business, and the ground beneath that task keeps shifting: taxation regimes change, financial markets digitise, and employers increasingly look for credentials that travel across borders. We have responded by pairing a strong B.Com and M.Com in Finance with globally recognised certifications through our ISDC partnership, and by giving students virtual trading laboratories, industrial visits and internships in which to test what they learn. Equally important is the support behind that ambition. Our Book Bank Scheme, remedial coaching and peer-assisted learning exist so that a student's circumstances never decide the outcome. Our recent rank holders, NET qualifiers and placements are the result of that combination. Whether you intend to enter the profession, sit for competitive examinations or build a venture of your own, you will find both direction and encouragement here.
