B.A. Economics (Honours/Research)
Department sections

Economics has been part of academic life at St. Xavier’s College since its early years, first as a pre-degree subject alongside History, Logic and Civics, and later as Managerial Economics for Commerce students. It became an independent undergraduate department in 2001. Its scholarly direction was shaped by Dr K. V. Joseph, Member of the Kerala Public Expenditure Review Committee, who led the department from 1966, and by the long service of Smt. Jessy Joseph, Sri K. J. Joseph and Sri Burney Sebastian Louis.
The department offers a B.A. in Economics (Honours/Research) under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, with a sanctioned intake of thirty seats. The curriculum brings together microeconomic and macroeconomic foundations with econometrics, development economics, public finance and environmental economics, alongside practical training in statistical software and economic modelling. Research training is staged rather than incidental, progressing from synopsis presentations through guided library and field work to a final-year dissertation.

Organised visits to the Centre for Development Studies, Ulloor, and the University of Kerala’s Department of Economics library give students direct exposure to doctoral-level scholarship.
Training in statistics, applied econometrics, economic modelling and data software equips students for analytical careers and competitive examinations.
Coursework connects economics with political science, sociology, public policy, business and mathematics, and the department regularly convenes cross-departmental academic forums.
Remedial coaching sits alongside NCC, NSS and sports participation, supporting academic and personal growth in tandem.

Economics teaches you to ask what a number actually represents, and whom it affects. That question runs through everything we do here. Our students study microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics with rigour, then carry those tools into budget analysis sessions, socio-economic surveys and a final-year dissertation of their own. Research training is deliberate: synopsis presentations before faculty and peers, guided visits to the Centre for Development Studies and the University of Kerala libraries, and steady individual mentoring throughout.
This department carries a long institutional memory, shaped by Dr K. V. Joseph and the teachers who followed him, and we carry that seriousness forward. We also hold that an economist’s training should not end at the classroom door, which is why our students engage in NSS drives, extension surveys and community field studies. You are most welcome to join us.
